In a class of its own!
Though it took 265 years to legalize and classify the distilled spirit of Brazil called Cachaça, on April 11th 2013 the United States recognized Cachaça as a distinctive product and signed an agreement with Brazil stating just that.
So what is Cachaça? Isn’t it a Rum product? No, Cachaça is a Brazilian spirit distilled and made from sugar cane juice. It is the 3rd most consumed spirit in the world, only behind Vodka and soju/shochu.
Cachaça, was initially created between 1532 and 1550, in Brazil. This precedes the creation of Rum, in 1651 in Barbados, by more than 100 years.
Unlike Rum, which is made of molasses, Cachaça can only be made from fresh cane juice and it is only made in Brazil. Since Cachaça is made from fresh cane juice and not the sugar cane derivative of molasses, it has a fruitier, fresher nose than Rum.
Cachaça has a sweet and fresh taste that is sure to please!
